Christine tapped her foot against the floor of my office, her arms folded across her chest. She even tossed her hair a few times. Like her daughter, Christine looked amazing when she was angry (also when she was happy, and sad, and all of the other emotions). ‘Is it true, Timothy?’ she asked him in a growl-like voice. ‘Did you actually put an entire tray of Frozen Stares into this glass of orange juice?’

‘I have no idea what a Frozen Stare is.’ Timothy gave us a sullen scowl. ‘And I have no idea why you’re both looking at me like that.’

Huh. That was an interesting comment. He should know what Frozen Stares were. They were an invention of Christine’s, yes, but they were so useful that they were now used widely by Wayfarers. They counted as vital evidence in trials, and how to store and treat them was bound to be on the curriculum at the Wayfarer Academy.

‘They’re how I freeze my visions, Timothy,’ Christine explained. ‘And how many others who scry via the medium of water have been taught to freeze and store their visions in recent years, so they can be used to show to others, or as evidence in trials. Didn’t you see the great big sign on the freezer upstairs? The one that said: “Do not open this freezer without the permission of a supervisor.”.’

‘Well, yeah. But I scored high enough to be a detective. Not just any old beat cop. I didn’t think it counted for me.’

‘It counts,’ said Christine. ‘Don’t go near that freezer again. Ever. Look, can you just leave us now, Timothy, Eddie?’

Timothy looked like he was about to protest, but Eddie dragged him out and closed the door.

Christine sank into the chair across from me, shaking her head. ‘I don’t understand it. I know Frozen Stares were on his exam – how to store them, how to liaise with Crime Prevention and any other scryers, how to verify their visions. There’s a whole section on it. I know, because I wrote that part of the paper. I’m getting the sneaking suspicion that he might be one of those people who does brilliantly in tests, but terribly in the real world.’

‘Yeah? Well, I’m not happy with him, but that’s a discussion for another time. Hey, when did you get here? I checked when I got in, and your floor was empty.’

She looked down at her hands. ‘Um … just a couple of minutes ago. I meant to stop in and say hello, but …’

‘But you were too busy sneaking past my office so you wouldn’t rouse my attention?’

She groaned. ‘Oh, Wanda, I don’t want to avoid you. Listen, can you just trust me for now, please? You’ll know what’s going on soon enough, but he just needs – I mean, we just need a little more time.’

‘You said “he” Christine. You mean Will, right? Do you know he’s hiding something at that old mansion of his?’

She gave me a sharp look. ‘Did he tell you about it?’

‘No.
